The stain I chose for my rifle was antique mahogany by Mountain State Muzzleloading (1-80). You can use a filler to fill the pores and then sand again or you can stain right over the bare wood. You want all the edges to remain sharp and clean so the wood-to-metal fit remains the same when you screw the furniture back on. When sanding, sand up to any edges without sanding over them and rounding them off. Superfine paper like 400 grit will make the wood too smooth, like glass, and it won't absorb stain. It can then be sanded smooth and the ding disappears.įor sanding, I don't like sandpaper that's too fine. Keep doing it until the ding swells and raises close to the level of the rest of the wood. To do this, lay a wet towel over the ding and then press a steam iron over it. If there are any dents or dings you want to get rid of, try raising them. Another way to age the brass is to rub blackpowder fouling on it and leave it there for several days.įor refinishing the stock, use a commercial stripper, like Strip Eze or Zip Strip to remove the old finish. I haven't died or gotten sick from it yet, but it can make you cough some. Take a deep breath and hold it while you heat it and do it in a well-ventilated area. When you pass the torch flame over the brass, it begins to turn shades of browns and even deep reds. But if you really want antique looking brass, I swab it with Casey's Super Blue and then heat it with a torch. I prefer Nye oil.įor aging brass furniture like capboxes, nosecaps and trigger guards, you can use Brass Black by Birchwood Casey for satisfactory results. Then dry the parts and coat them with oil. ![]() The final step is crucial and you must soak the parts in the recommended solution to stop the rust process or the metal will just keep rusting away. Some of the other browning solutions from muzzleloader supply dealers also can achieve similar results. The solution is acidic and it pits the surface of the metal, giving it the patina finish which makes it look like it's more than 100 years old. If you follow the directions carefully, steel woofing and re-applying the solution daily, you should achieve a rich brown or plum brown patina finish within seven to 10 days. And don't forget to plug the muzzle of the barrel and drive the sights out before applying the solution. To achieve a rich brown patina finish on the blued barrel and other blued steel furniture without having to strip the old blue, I use Bill's Brown Patina Restoring Solution available from Bill's Gun Repair, 1007 Burlington St., Mendota, IL 61342.īefore aging the hammer and lock plate, remove the hammer and take the lock apart so that the working parts don't get rusty from the solution. Remove the lock, trigger assembly and all the metal furniture, leaving just a bare wood stock. They're designed not to slip out of the slot in the screw head. If you haven't got a few hollow-ground gunsmith screwdrivers, now's the time to get some. Start by making sure the rifle is unloaded, then remove the barrel from the stock. You need to refinish the stock and age the barrel and furniture. ![]() If you've got a blackpowder rifle, you can make it more authentic looking by antiquing it yourself at home with a few tools, some solutions and a little time.
